Participating artists: Aurora De Armendi Sobrino, Julie Evans, Mollie McKinley, Jason Middlebrook, Susan Walsh, Susan Wides, Kathleen Vance
The artists in Second Nature create work that is inspired by the natural world. Utilizing a variety of mediums and processes, they celebrate nature and examine our relationship to the environment while also calling attention to climate change and the precariousness of the world’s ecosystems. Susan Walsh uses rain and wind in her artistic practice as a collaboration between herself and the environment. Mollie McKinley’s sculptures are formed from salt blocks carved by water and hand-blown glass, and her photographic sculptural works contain close-up images of caves and flowing water. For Aurora De Armendi Sobrino, Julie Evans, and Jason Middlebrook, nature is a starting point to explore patterns and compositions, combining recognizable botanical forms with abstraction. Susan Wides’ abstract photographs are taken outdoors and create a sensation of color and place without referencing a specific location. Intrigued by places where manicured nature is reclaimed by the wild, Kathleen Vance creates miniature worlds that explore the ways in which nature can be brought back into daily life.
